A River Town on a County Line
John Marvin, Bethuel Hack, and Harmon Allen founded Milan in 1831 on the Saline River; renamed in 1836 for the Italian city, Milan straddles the Washtenaw-Monroe county line and became a Michigan city only in 1967.
Decks Along a River That Splits Two Counties
Milan's oldest yards along the Saline River sit on the same poorly-drained till found through the wider Huron and Raisin watersheds, and because the town straddles a county line, permit review for riverside deck work can fall to either Washtenaw or Monroe County depending on exactly where the lot sits.
